Study Abroad Immersion Program

The Study Abroad Immersion Program Experienced by
Indiana University students in Costa Rica July 2021

Academia de Español Nicoya offers a welcoming environment to develop your Spanish communication skills. You will enjoy morning sessions with attentive team leaders and teachers who will help you improve your language level.  They will also prepare you to explore daily cultural experiences and the beauty of nature.

Nicoya is a small town full of traditions and simplicity.   It is always interesting to walk its streets and observe the Pura Vida way of living.  Little markets, swimming pools, delicious tropical smoothies and window-shopping are always conveniently available. You can also climb to Cerro de la Cruz for wonderful views of the town and surrounding area.

During the afternoons you can also enjoy painting classes guided by a local artist.

Music is always nice!  Ticos are known to be good dancers.  In the evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy Latin Dance lessons at the school.  Rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue and Bachata will challenge your dance skills, and allow you a chance to relax, and refresh your energy and enthusiasm.

Time for an overnight excursion to Samara Beach!

In less than one hour of winding though the scenic hills you will experience the warm sand, waves, sun, and palms with numerous adventures to choose from.

Kayaking on the sea to reach Isla Chora (Chora Island) lets you feel the ocean breezes and salty water while admiring the coastline and its Flora and Fauna.

Samara offers a laidback environment, with several souvenir stores.  There are also many restaurants for sharing a meal or a drink with your new friends.   Or, simply lie on the beach and connect with your inner self.

A Canopy Tour will certainly challenge your adrenaline; or, you can opt for a Boat Tour to watch the beautiful dolphins and perhaps even see whales.  No matter what you decide, it is always an adventure!

Back in Nicoya Spanish classes must go on!  There is time dedicated for practice, new topics and socialization in order to achieve your academic goals.

The Celebration of Annexation Day takes place in July.  This event commemorates the democratic decision of the region’s inhabitants, by their own will, to become part of beautiful Costa Rica.

Marimba bands, guitars, traditional dresses and fireworks become part of the elements which celebrate “La Guanacastequidad” (Guanacastans’ identity).

The mountainous west side of Guanacaste is full of rivers and interesting villages. It features Rincón de la Vieja National Park, where an active volcano creates a natural spa with mud baths and hot springs along Río Negro at Hacienda Guachipelling Resort. Warm water from the springs contrast with the chill temperature of the river, creating soothing natural sounds.

Palo Verde National Park is located along the Tempisque River.  It has an abundance of biodiversity. During a Boat Tour, monkeys, crocodiles and several species of birds are commonly seen. Nearby, Guaitil Village is located.   It is renowned for preserving the indigenous Chorotega pottery heritage and the secrets of Chorotega art that have been passed down through generations.

Participants have the opportunity to live with a Costa Rican family, offering them clean and comfortable accommodations.  The families are kind, warm and thoughtful, always trying to provide their guests with a positive homestay experience.  The families are conveniently located near the school and to downtown.  Very quickly, you will feel like part of the family!
