Nicoya Farmers’ Market (La Feria del Agricultor)

The Nicoya Farmers’ Market is a vibrant place where you can immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, and gain a better understanding of the Nicoyan way of life.

The Feria del Agricultor (Farmers’  Market) takes place every Friday, from 6:00 am until approximately 3:00 pm.  The vendors set up their stalls every Thursday afternoon in preparation for Friday morning.

The producers come from the rural areas surrounding Nicoya and offer a variety of fresh products with very competitive prices, all in one convenient place.

In addition to a wide selection of fruits and vegetables you will find local cuisine, seasonal exotic tropical fruits, ornamental plants, fruit trees and natural remedies.

Located in the tropics with two seasons (dry and rainy) and a variety of microclimates, Costa Rica enjoys the kindness of nature in having fresh products all year round.

Many exotic tropical fruits with interesting shapes, colors, textures and flavors can be found throughout the year in the Feria del Agricultor, such as:

  • Pitaya (Dragon fruit)
  • Mamón Chino (Rambutan)
  • Zapote
  • Guanabana (soursop)
  • Guaba (Guava)
  • Caimito
  • Mangostán (Mangosteen)

Before modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, Costa Ricans relied on natural remedies. With the knowledge and wisdom of their elders, they reaped the beneficial properties of different plants, flowers and herbs, treating different symptoms, providing a source of vitamins and minerals to strengthen the immune system, and increasing quality of life and energy levels.

Many traditional natural remedies can still be found in the Feria del Agricultor.  For example:

  • Carao : to prevent anemia and strengthen the immune system
  • Noni :  offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits
  • Honey: antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Moringa: can lower cholesterol levels, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease
  • Aloe vera: heartburn relief
  • Juanilama (bushy matgrass): helps digestive problems
  • Cúrcuma (Tumeric): antioxidant  and anti-inflammatory properties

These products are offered as extracts, syrups and infusions.  Some are eaten fresh, or processed in juice.

During a visit to the market you will find vendors offering local cuisine, baked goods and sweets.

Historically corn is one of the main local products.  It is a central part of the diet, culture and traditions in Guanacaste.

Many food preparations are based on corn and its different presentations and varieties.  It is generally cooked or baked with firewood, which infuses the dish with a special taste and aroma.

  • Guiso de chilote (baby-corn stew)
  • Chileras (pickle hot peppers)
  • Tamal asado (baked corn pudding)
  • Empanadas
  • Dry cheese (for use in baked corn dishes)
  • Corn tortillas
  • Cajetas (dessert treats)
  • Baked goods
